Oboe (ō'bō) n.
A slender woodwind instrument with a conical bore and a double-reed mouthpiece, having a range of three octaves and a penetrating, poignant sound.
(the above definition was taken from Answers.com)
My cousin Mary's daughter, Kayla is an oboist. While she was in high school she played in the orchestra and even traveled to New York City to perform a couple years ago. She was offered some music scholarships but decided to attend the University of Wyoming on an academic scholarship. The oboe is the instrument in the orchestra that all the rest of the instruments must tune to. That's because it is the most difficult instrument to tune! I sometimes get the oboe's sound mixed up with the bassoon, but they are really very different. The bassoon is deeper, lower I think. The following video is from The Mission (which was one of Jessica's favorite movies) and features the oboe ~ "Gabriel's Oboe". I hope you can listen to it all the way through. It is truly lovely.

Nice word of the week, ma'am! Yes, the bassoon produces a deeper, reedy tone (my wife & I were music majors in college; we met in the music department).
Hi Cassie,
That is a very nice choice for the letter O! Beautiful video, too. I once attended the funeral of a man whose daughter (a ballerina) danced while she was accompanied by a lady playing the oboe. It was different, but very tastifully done.
What a beautiful sound to make! Makes me wish I had learned some sort of musical talent...besides playing my CD's. :)
Great O Cassie.
I hope you are doing well!! XOXOX Suz
Hi Cas---how's life????? You are going to spoil us posting early.. What is this--two or three times in a row????? ha ha ha ha (Proud of you)
I LOVE the oboe... I never played one--but love their sound. I played the clarinet all through high school --but never played it again after going to college.
Great "O" word.
Hugs,
Betsy
That was beautiful! Great O word Cassie!
Happy Monday Cassie
Beautiful calming sound the oboe player has here.
Cassie..
Nice choice for an O word..
obscure just came to mind!!

My musical ability always made my son cry..so I too stick to playing the radio!
♥hugs and smiles from Denver!
The first time that I saw my husband of 27 years, he was sitting behind me in an orchestra, playing an oboe. Now his instrument of choice is a guitar (we have like 9 in in our house!) but I'll always have the memory of him in 1978 playing the oboe.
What a magical, beautiful video to listen to Cassie! This was a great "O" post. Hope you have a nice week!
Very pleasant music!
I always liked the sound of the oboe. Nice pick!
Nice posting, cousin Cassie! I find I love the sound of most double-reed instruments. Not sure why; they just seem to appeal to me. ~John
lovely music cassie,,,,,, I know it well
xx
a very nice o word!
my son tried the oboe in summer music camp a couple years ago... and i forbid him to choose it in band! those reeds cost a fortune and he chewed right through three of them in one week! but his friend is playing it :)
That was a wonderful song, Cassie. Great choice for "O" week. Yikes, almost time for "N." HA! I better start thinking of something. :D
